Message to Parents About Lock Out Procedures

Lock Out Procedures Reviewed
I love you guys GIF

The Salida School District wants to thank you for your patience and cooperation during the past week as our community experienced two situations requiring our buildings to follow Lock Out protocols. Both events ran smoothly but we thought it would be beneficial to present the Standard Response Protocol utilized in our schools when the police direct a Lock Out response.  These nationally recognized responses guide activity in the building. Often times the building is responding to external events in a manner that minimizes exposure for students and staff to the perceived threat. Other times we are ensuring we do not complicate police response in the area. While it can be inconvenient and sometimes stressful, it is imperative that you allow the school to perform these processes with the understanding that information is shared as quickly as we are able. Should a lock out or lock down run past the regular 4 pm close of the day the school would notify parents about the reunification process and location. You can help by:

  • 1) downloading the Salida School app to your phone and enabling notifications to be persistent on your personal device.
  • 2) do not come to the building until you are instructed to by the school district- be sure your contact information is up to date and you have identification. Do not swamp the phone systems with calls to the office or dispatch. Our capacity will be focused on the needs of students and security.  Again, we will reach out with information when we have it to share.
  • 3) monitor the school district website for information in addition to the app and your email/ voicemail. Those are the means by which the school will release information. In the case of an internet outage, please tune to local radio for information.
  • 4) if your student is not in the building when a lock out is called, they should remain at home until the situation has cleared. This is especially important for part time students, those that enjoy off campus lunch and classes, etc. You need to have a conversation with your older students to discuss what your individual family will do during an emergency.
  • 5) our School District takes the security of our staff and students very seriously. Please contact your school principal if you have specific questions. Rest assured, we are all in the business of doing the most appropriate thing for students. Understanding your role and the commitment of the school will help us all to do the right thing at the right time in these unfortunate situations.
