Gifted and Talented


“Gifted children” means those persons whose abilities, talents, and potential for accomplishment are so exceptional or developmentally advanced that they require special provisions to meet their educational programming needs. Gifted students include gifted students with disabilities and students with exceptional abilities or potential from all socio-economic and ethnic, cultural populations. Gifted students are capable of high performance, exceptional, production, or exceptional learning behavior by virtue of any or a combination of these areas of giftedness:
• General or specific intellectual ability
• Specific academic aptitude
• Creative or productive thinking
• Leadership abilities
• Visual arts, performing arts, musical or psychomotor abilities

• Identification of Gifted Students will be based on:
• Teacher recommendation
• Parent recommendation
• Assessment data
o NWEA Maps – Gifted RIT Scores
o CogAT

• Child study

• Work samples
• Self-selection

Identification may be initiated at any time during the year and begin with anyone. The process begins with the nomination or referral process. Recommended students will be used to create a pool of possible Gifted Students. Formal identification will be completed at the end of the third grade year. Students who enter the district after this time will be referred and identified in a timely manner.

Referrals will be forwarded to the building counselors. Recommended students from grade K – 2 will be monitored for additional information, this pool of students will be refereed to a child study team to review a profile of the student information, including assessment data, recommendations, work samples, discipline reports, etc. If the team deems it appropriate, the student will be referred for assessment with the CogAT. Students who score in the 9th Stanine, based on age, on the Composite score will be placed in the Gifted Education Program.


Students identified for Gifted Education will be challenged through individualized learning projectsand learning plans.
Each building counselor will be responsible for completing an annual review/revision of the students ALP and distributing that information to the appropriate classroom teachers.


Academic growth will be monitored through NWEA and CSAP scores. Specific ALP goals will be monitored for relative performance area goals.
